Doing the interest profiler quiz was really interesting for me. Some of the results I anticipated. For example, the artistic category was highest for me, which aligns greatly with my interests and potential career pursuits. Other results were a little surprising. I did not anticipate that enterprising would be my second highest result. I have honestly always considered myself to be more of a follower than a leader. Even though I might be proactive in a group project, I am not necessarily going to be the first person to create a new organization. I want other people to set the foundation, not go off on my own. I don’t have enough motivation or a business mindset to do something like found my own company for example. However I do think I could be good in a role where I get to manage smaller groups. Managing a whole company, maybe not a smaller group could be a possibility.
Something that I liked a lot about the O*NET website was how thorough it was with its results. I liked that it showed you different jobs that required different levels of preparation as well as hyperlinks for each job. I think that this can be a really useful tool regardless of whether or not you know what you want to do in the future. Even if you know that you want to be a teacher for example, it’s nice to see your skills mapped out in a grid and potentially explore how different aspects of your personality can manifest into a career. Another nice thing is that it shows you so many different kinds of jobs that you might not have even heard of before. Something I know to be true for myself at least is that the list of careers that I am familiar with is very narrow. There are also certain things that I feel that society has deemed “acceptable” or “reasonable” jobs. Those are jobs like doctor, lawyer, engineer, or teacher. They are conventional jobs that people have heard of before and can understand. But the important thing is that there are so many different types of jobs out there. Overall, I liked doing this exercise because i liked that it introduced me to different types of jobs.
