Weekly Writing #1

Letter Writing

Writing letters is an unhurried and deliberate means of communication. It can seem dull at first but it truly allows you to consider your intentions to the receiver of the letter. In the age of technology, sending a letter feels outdated. We live in a time when sending a message to someone takes very little thought and effort on our part. The receiver gets the message instantly and conversation can flow as if you are speaking in person. However, sending a letter is a much longer process. Not only is a letter handwritten, but a message will not arrive to its recipient for several days. Not to mention, for those of us who grew up typing all our essays on computers, the muscles in our hands start to cramp after only a few sentences. All that to say that letter writing requires much more presence of mind than an email or text. It forces you to take some time out of your day and pay attention to your words and to the person who will get your letter.

I am simultaneously excited about this course and also a little daunted. College writing seems like a much larger step up from high school writing. I’m nervous! I read the writing of my peers and I wonder how they do it. Writing for me is a slow process which involves me overthinking every sentence as I write it. I try to perfect as I go which only results in slowing me down instead of speeding me up. Despite my concerns, I know that my writing process needs some improvement and I’m excited to really spend time learning how to elevate my writing.

My Writing Process

I have several goals for my writing in general. Improving the ability to write in a more professional term. Not being daunted by longer, more in depth analysis and citing outside sources. Being able to come up with a strong thesis and a plan for my papers instead of beginning to write blindly and with no sense of direction. All of these are parts of my writing process that I feel are fundamental, and will help me be a stronger, more secure writer in the future.

I feel that my abilities as a writer have come very far since the beginning of high school and I’m excited to see how I improve in college. I am proud of myself for learning methods that help me create stronger writing. For example, I know that in order for me to make a paper easier for myself I need to have a very solid plan for how I want the paper to look before I start putting words on the page. I also pride myself on my vocabulary and knowing how to form complex sentences. Now, in college, I want to strengthen the abilities I already possess and focus on making writing less stressful and daunting.
